- Uttar Pradesh (UP): The state has taken significant steps under the Namami Gange project to protect turtle habitats. Conservation centers have been established in Kukrail, Sarnath, and Chambal, along with a dedicated Turtle Sanctuary near Prayagraj. This sanctuary, set up in 2020, spans 30 kilometers across Prayagraj, Mirzapur, and Bhadohi districts. UP is home to 15 out of India’s 30 turtle species, including ecologically crucial ones like Katahwa, Morpankhi, Saal, and Sundari.
- Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR): On World Turtle Day, PTR launched a comprehensive long-term strategic plan targeting the elimination of illegal turtle trafficking, the advancement of scientific conservation methods, and the restoration of turtle habitats. This initiative underscores PTR’s commitment to wildlife conservation and the importance of safeguarding endangered species against trafficking and environmental degradation.
