Eye of fire in a Gulf of Mexico: a curse on ocean life

We all saw a fire on the ocean surface on 2nd July 2021. The incident took place in a Gulf of Mexico. When state oil company Pemex started ocean mining at the ocean surface west of Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. State oil company Pemex indicted a gas leak from an underwater pipeline for provoking the flame shown in videos that went viral.

Bright orange flames jumping out of the blue ocean was a resemblance of molten lava. Due to the fire’s circular shape, social media took the “eye of fire” to viral it. The fire took more than five hours to extinguish. The ocean mining industry has failed to make things sustainable. We have seen cases of tons of oil spills in the ocean.

The oil sticks on furry birds or animals and causes their death. The brutal murder of aquatic life is in the hands of mankind. Yet, there is no way to clean 100% of oil spills. No doubt, this oil spill is toxic as it also affects the people who rely on seafood. Comprehend, the toxicity we make around us and kill millions of animals for our luxury. This is barbaric. Is this how we will save our earth?

However, in the Gulf of Mexico, the case is varied. Pemex mentioned that there was a gas leak and not an oil leak. The underwater pipeline was broken and the gas was constantly jumping out. The fire may have been caused by methane and probably other wet gas components. There were three boats to extinguish the fire. They used nitrogen to put off the fire. This might make you think that if the oil spill destroys aquatic life, then how harmful gas leaks would be for marine life?

Toxic gases will damage the bodies of fish that come into contact by damaging their gills and causing internal damage. Meanwhile, seafood lovers are also affected by harmful gases. And the cycle continues. In the Gulf of Mexico, the fire took place for more than 5 hours. Think about the quantity of gas at that place. Though they successfully fought with fire. But, the damage is done!

This industry needs to find a sustainable way. Otherwise, the ocean will be destroyed in a few years and it will disturb the balance of nature. This may lead to a difficult time on earth. I’ll leave you with a question. Would you like to have more resources for the future or a pure and healthier lifestyle?
