The Bengal tiger population in the zoo has gone up to nine.

Two new Royal Bengal cubs were born at the Assam State Zoo-cum-Botanical Garden in Guwahati on Thursday. A Royal Bengal tigress named “Kazi” gave birth to two cubs last week. With these cubs, the Bengal tiger population in the zoo has gone up to nine.

Kazi had earlier given birth to two cubs, named Sultan and Suresh, in August 2020. The cubs are healthy.

Dr. Ashwini Kumar, Divisional Forest Officer of the Assam State Zoo, informed that the mother and the cubs are in good health, with the zookeepers taking all precautionary measures to protect them from the biting cold by placing heaters outside the cage and adequate dry straw inside the enclosure.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (Wildlife), Amit Sahai, said the mother is being taken care of with a nutritious diet. “Around 6-7 kg of meat is being provided to the mother along with other veterinary prescribed food,” he added.

Mr. Sahai said the focus is on providing a hygienic environment to the animals in the zoo. “Focus is on hygiene and cleanliness in and around the enclosure so that the mother and her cubs are not afflicted with any disease,” he added. Mr. Sahai was optimistic that the zoo would be able to attract more visitors now with the arrival of the new inmates.

Meanwhile, the forest authorities have requested Environment and Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya to come up with names for the newly born cubs. Mr. Suklabaidya has named several animals in the past which have become popular.

Expressing the view that breeding and childbirth are not very common in zoos, Rahul Patel, Public Relations Officer, Statue of Unity, said that the animals are taken care of here following all the criteria laid down by the Zoo Authority of India. As a result, after leopard, deer now the lioness gave birth to cubs in the middle of the night on Monday. The cubs are healthy and presently not on display as they are just born and under strict observation doctors and biologists. The lion couple is here for more than a year and is their first breeding.

This jungle safari is throbbing with tourists every day and the birth of cubs is definitely a big event. After 230 days of pregnancy, the lioness gave birth to cubs. It is not possible to know the sex of the cub for some time after the birth and they will be named after the zoologists have decided on their species at the right time.

The cage is alive with the arrival of the naughty cubs of the Asian lion couple. One of the major attractions associated with the Statue of Unity in Ekta Nagar is the jungle safari where wildlife is cared for by skilled keepers and doctors. Every enclosure has an animal keeper for 24 hours and a curator and doctor visit twice a day. The zoo Curator is ACF Ravirajsinh Rathod and the Jungle Safari director is DCF Ramratan Nala.

The female cub was killed by another lion during infighting while the exact cause behind the death of the male lion will be known after conducting a postmortem.

An adult male lion and a female cub were found dead in different parts of the Gir forest in Gujarat, an official said on Wednesday.

The female cub was killed by another lion during infighting as per the postmortem report, Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF), Junagadh Wildlife Division, DT Vasavada said.

The exact cause behind the death of the male lion will be known after conducting a postmortem later on Wednesday, the CCF said.

Mr. Vasavada said that field staff of the Forest department spotted the carcass of the cub, aged around 1.5 years, during foot patrolling on Tuesday in the forests near Manekpur village in the Gir-Somnath district, which falls under the Gir-East division.

“Nothing suspicious was found from the spot by the field staff. The carcass was then sent to the Lombardi animal care center for postmortem. The report confirmed that the cub died due to injuries it received during infighting with another lion,” said Mr. Vasavada.

Also on Tuesday, a beat guard found the carcass of the male lion, aged around 5 to 10 years, in the forests near Gadhada village in Mahuva taluka of the Bhavnagar district, which falls under the Shetrunjee wildlife division of the Gir forest, the CCF added.
